     Hi, I’m Chef Hakim, founder of My Culinary Compass — and like many meaningful journeys, mine didn’t start in a fancy kitchen or a five-star restaurant. It started with a pivot.

     I grew up in New York, more focused on basketball than books, and definitely not dreaming of culinary school. But everything changed when I joined the U.S. Navy. What started as a military assignment in a cooking program became the spark that lit a lifelong passion. From ice carving to night baking, the Navy opened my eyes to a world of creativity, precision, and discipline in the kitchen — and I fell in love with the craft.

     Through my service, I trained at respected culinary institutions like First Coast Technical College and the Institute of Culinary Education in New York, sharpening not just my knife skills but my sense of purpose. After cooking professionally in New York — including at the legendary Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola — I knew I had the experience. But       I also knew I wanted something different: more freedom, more connection, more life outside the kitchen line.

    That’s when I discovered the personal chef world, and it felt like home. It gave me the freedom to serve others with excellence and be present for the people who matter most — my family.

    Speaking of family, let me introduce you to my better half, Raina. She didn’t set out to be in the culinary world either, but her Island upbringing (much like mine) taught her that food is the heart of every gathering. She’s now the heart of our business too — my trusted sous chef, prep wizard, and the warm smile guests remember long after dessert.

     Together, we’ve built My Culinary Compass not just as a service, but as an experience — one rooted in love, hospitality, and shared tradition. Our home is full of laughter, kids learning to stir waffle batter, and meals that bring everyone to the table. That’s what we aim to bring to you, too — whether it’s a romantic date night, a group celebration, or a corporate retreat in beautiful Central Florida.
